ML 320 Diff or Transfer problem?

MY sister has a 98 ML 320. When the truck is at stop and pulls away in a straight line, there is no problem. If she pulls away turning left or right then there is a terrible grinding noise + vibration that definitely can be felt! We're not sure whether it is the diff or the transfer box. Anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks.

On the 98 that I had when pulling away at slow speeds like leaving a parking spot the vehicle shuddered but no noise or4 grinding. This was common on all 98's due to the 50/50 front/rear power distribution. In later models this was solved by changing slightly the distribution to slightly favor the rear wheels. While I never had a problem with the 98 I could imagine that in time and with a lot more miles on it it could develop into a bad transfer case from the stresses put on components and I have heard of others that have had problems from this. My 02 never did this due to the change in the distribution ratio. Dealer had told me re the 98 that they all did this and it was normal. Your sister will most likely need a new transfer case assembly

that is what my 98 ML does when i do turns (even worse during tight turns) -- the vehicle shudders! sometimes i just don't step on the gas and just let the truck "free-wheel". it's kinda embarrassing when i have passengers.

sosh is right about the power distribution for the front and rear. the "50/50" ratio really sucks. i'll try to check on how much would it cost to change the ratio to "60/40" and if it would be feasible for me to do it.

cheers!

Thanks guys really helps. My dad who is doing the work thought it was that, but wanted to be sure before he took the thing to pieces.
