BAS ESP light.
Interesting incident happened to me few days a go. Took one of my 2001 ML55 for E-check, got there, everything went good till they checked the gas tank cap. One of the workers came up to me said that my gas cap failed the test, that they will replace it for me for free.Fine with me. So on the way out of the E-check i noticed that my BASESP light was off, So the gas cap was the reason my BASESP light was on.
I thought that my abs module was bad or something. Would never think that it would have something to do with the gas cap.
Maybe my post will help someone to fix there BASESP light cheap. Good-luck

i just finished replacing lower ball joints on both the rear end. After starting the car i notice BAS ESP light came up too. Will check the gas cap. How was the test performed. I think i broke the tab (that was inside the carrier recess) of the e-brake that might have cause the light to go on. Any other suggestions until i plug the scanner in to check tomorrow. Thanks

Sorry, but there is absolutely no way that a leaking fuel cap can cause a BAS/ESP malfunction. One is controlled through the traction system and the other is a monitored system through the engine module. Something else must have happened or must have been reset during their check to clear the BAS/ESP issue.

update, today i went home and remove the speed sensor wire and test if the wire has resistant and it does. Hook it back up and made sure everything was connected correct. Start the car and the light was still on. Took it for a ride and within minutes the light disappear. Vanish in thin air. I'm all happy. I think the problem is that i had the car jack up overnight working on the rear joints too long and BAS ESP lights appear. After it senses that the car leveled and in motion, the light went away.
