1998 ML 320 Rear Differential
Hi I have a 98 ML320 with 170k miles and in need of a rear differential i am told by indie mechanic...$1400(!).
Looking for advice on if you would do the work and keep her on the road (she has rust, door lock issues, ETS light) or let her go. Not sure what to do with the vehicle. Thoughts appreciated.

It makes a sound like the tires are rubbing on acceleration / deceleration. Low pitch hum. Mechanic diagnosed as rear differential needs to be replace - $1400 parts and labor.
I love this vehicle but maybe its time for another. Just not sure what to do with this one. Thanks for the replies.

Why don't you change the fluid as it probably has never been changed.
You will need 1.3 qts. of any of the ones on this list. Front & rear axle oils are the same.

Change the oil just like Mr Dundee said or if it dosnt help get a differential on Ebay, looks like its around $200 and take a day and replace it yourself, thats what i would do. If you cant replace it yourself get it urself and find a mechanic that will do it for reasonable price because looks like you paying about 1200 for labor.
Where do you live? i am parting out ML500 do have all the parts still, just got it from California and i am in Cleveland ohio.
If you like the car and its still runs good just fix it and keep it they go to 250k 300k if you take a good care of it.
