4 wheel alignment

I am about to put 4 new tires on the wife's ML 430. Do you guys always do a 4 wheel alignment when getting new tires installed? Normally, I might consider it but both the dealer and the local high end MB, BMW, Porsche, Audi shop want like $100 for this and that seems way too high. Do I really even need it?

Hi. When you say wheel alignment do you mean the tracking? or are you refering to getting the tyres balanced?

On the 98 I had and my present ML500 I have never had or required an alignment. If you have experienced no tracking problems or uneven tire wear you do not need it. Just be certain that the tires are correctly balanced with a newer computer equipment

I did have a some uneven tire wear towards the end of the tire life but I attribute this to not having the correct air pressure and the General tires being crappy. I knew the tires were going to die soon so I didin't check the air pressure towards the end of their life span. The extra wear was on the outside of the tires and I felt they were probably underinflated. Good to know this is not a $100 standard thing when you get the tires changed on the ML.

I am about to get in the same boat..

AT 74K miles, my 00 320 needs its third set of tires pretty soon...the first set I went thru, I had uneven wear...so, when I got them replaced I had the wheels aligned..

With the second set, I was very punctual about the rotation and every 2 months checked the wear pattern to make sure it was not getting uneven...also checked the air pressure at least once every six months or so...

I not only got about 7-10K miles more from the tires the second time, but also have a near even wear pattern on all 4.

I won't be aligning them this time around when I replace them.

alignments never hurt to get, but not really necessary if not pulling. im surprised your dealer only wants to charge 100, mine said 300!

Yep I got it done at the dealership...and it was $96 for all wheels front & rear...

I don't even think any other shop can align MBs...I tired a couple, but they all said they didn't have the equipment to align this truck...

I went to an alignment specialty shop to have mine done and a good shop will charge about $75, $100 if it's lowered.

$300 is RIDICULOUS. I hope you didn't grab your ankles on that one.
