How can I test if my M-Class Audio Amplifier(s) are dead?

I bought my son a 2004 ML500 and shortly after he started driving it, the audio just went silent. The unit in the dash still functioned properly, just the sound stopped. So I bought a replacement amplifier off of ebay and we swapped it out. That fixed our problem for about a week. Then the exact same thing happened. Now, rather than buy a third amp or troubleshoot what I think is a wiring harness problem (maybe...) I think I'm going to just put in an aftermarket stereo, bypass the amp altogether and only use the speakers. Can someone tell me how I can test the two amps I have to see if they are in fact still okay? Thanks.

If you think it is a wiring problem, which I agree, why don't you manipulate the harness or remove the connector and see what the problem is.
