03 ML350 transmission module problem ?

After 10K miles on my 03 ML 350, yesterday, it started to have problems in changing gears on the road, noticed that 'D' wasn't there on the display.
Then stopped and tried to start again, saw "start error" message, it still started but "check engine" light was on. Got it towed to the nearest dealer which is out of town. Any comments, anybody had similar problem ? Roadside assistance guy thinks some problem with the electronics of the transmission module but yet to hear from the SA.

Only way to tell is to interrogate the computer. All else would be a guess

The SA told me that they have ordered for a transmission control module part to replace. He says it is a computer problem. Is there any intelligent question that I can ask him to get a better understanding ? He did not have a reason on why it happened.

From what you described it sounds like the shifter went bad, I guess it could be the module but module failures are few and far between.
