Radiator Cooling Fan, ECU Communication
Hi,
I have a 2003 ML500 VIN 4JGAB75E23A374292.
I put in a new VDO cooling fan assy. There is a tag that says the fan must be set up electronically.
I bought a Carsoft MBII to set up the fan. It never led me to that procedure but found component 15/3, the ECT Control Module, was faulty (P2001), that there is no communication with the ECM (P2073-000) and circuit 87 has undervoltage (P2600).
I replaced the coolant temp sensor, cleared the fault code, retested and no new fault code was generated.
The radiator dash light stays on all the time.
The cooling fan does not come on even when the temp exceeds 95 degrees C.
Now trying to figure out if the ECM communication issue is because of a broken wire associated with the socket for the scanner, problems with the ECM wiring or socket or if the ECM itself is faulty.
Is there a way to test the pins on the scanner socket? The ECM wiring? Also where the heck is the ECM located?
In advance, thank you so much,
Terry in Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico

The problem you are having is always because the aftermarket fan is not wired correctly. Look at both the original fan and the new one and compare the wire colors.
Remove the connector to the fan and turn the ign. ON. Check RED wire for 12v......check BROWN wire for GROUND......check the BLUE wire for 12v.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
I tested the four wires leading to the fan motor.
Red has 12v and is always hot.
Brown has continuity with ground.
Blue has 12v when ignition is on.
I'm not sure the socket that houses the blue and white wires is wired the same as my original fan.
On the original fan, the blue wire is corresponds to the number 2 pin which is located on the far side of the socket in relation to the red and brown wires.
On the new fan, the pins are not numbered and the blue wire corresponds to the pin located on the near side of the socket.
Do you think it's possible that the aftermarket fan is wired opposite?
Also could you please tell me where the ECM is located?
Thanks!
Terry K.

I told you in my opening sentence that they are not wired correctly.
The ECM is located in the underhood fuse box. I caution you not to jump any wire/s or else you will need a new ECM.
