I think I fried my car using engine rotation to loosen crank pulley bolt. Wont start
I got really dumb and cranked my engine with a breaker bar on my crank pulley bolt. I needed to swap her harmonic balancer and didnt think I could possibly spend $150 on crank holding tool and none of the MB local shops wouldnt lend me one.... Now I think I coulda spent the dough. I've 3 vehicles and do all my own work forever and i do a good job and i give my vehicles the money and the patience they need and I love gaining all the experience, but all month they poured repair needs on me, along with tons of family health needs and I lost my patience and peace and put the breaker bar on my crank/ harm. Bal. Bolt and turned the key to let the battery try to turn the crankshaft to spin its bolt off. I gave it like 8 good tries. The longest I held the key turned was bout 5 seconds. It sounds like such a bad idea but was desperate anyway... didn't work, got the cheap crank holding tool, modified it to fit and changed the harmonic balancer. Then start it and the battery struggled to start it.... she always turns over 4 times and vroom! Now turns like 7-8 times slowly. But not like the battery was low more like the engine or starter was somewhat seized.... or maybe like the battery was badly damaged...... but when she did start she purred good. But then of coarse .5 hour later the water pump pulley/ fan pulley was super wobbly, so parked her and changed water pump , idler pulley and belt tensioner yesterday. Great no prob purring good, except still the unnerving labored start.
Take her to hospital to pick up and bring my brother to inpatient 40 miles away stop at a light 2 blocks from the destination and she starts bogging hard, battery light blinking, my brother hes a seriously expert small engines wiz,,,though he was real shaky today we agreed it sounded like fuel filter was clogged. We know it wasnt, that's just the sound feel she was giving...... possibly like 4 cylinders were misfiring, but no misfire smell or backfire. Puter in neutral giver gas and that changed zero nada. She stalls start her again and was very very labored start of the same sound: friction sound, like seized pistons sliding in a cylander, we know it wasnt seized engine... I hope... but that was the sound..... stalled agaicouple times till the battery couldnt start her no more (3 times only) so pushed her to parking lot.
Then got a ride from impatient staff people to get new battery. Tge new battery helped zero nada very barely turned over then after 2 cranks she wouldnt turn over at all when I turn key.
Fuel pump runs. something, maybe the solenoid, clicks. Windows and locks and interior lights items work fine. We let air or gas out of gas line bleeder doodad under the hood manually used throttle under the hood at first when she was still barely running. jumped her wracked our brains for an immediate solution for 10 min then Threw in tge towel and bought a ride 40 miles to home to think and research..
any theories would help alot
my own humble theories are: fried something electric...ie. solenoid starter alternator. seized drive belt pulley or their connection/bearings .. ie maybe I over torqued crank pulley although i did use manufacturer's torque specs, but I reused old crank pulley bolt, bear in mind she began the labored start thing before I reinstalled drive belt, so not any other pulley.
could I have thrown her out of timing/ignition timing when I was fumbling around trying makeshift tools and trying to us my battery/ engin rotation to loosen my crank bolt. I had the breaker bar on ground, and when I cranked engine it lifted to car up on the suspension some maybe it damaged an internal crank bearing or timing gear. I definately rotated the crank a quarter turn or so clockwise and coaunter clockwise when I was trying homemade harmonic balancer crank/ harmonic balancer tools maybe that through her out of timing. Also, maybe timing got thrown because the outside metal of the harmonic balance was most likely slipping on the harmonic balancers rubber. that was my first guess, then I started to fail to understand how the harmonic balancer slipping could effect timing.... like the drive belt doesnt control timing right? Tge cranks rotation does not drive belt accessories.
I just never had to work with a crankshaft before, ive got hundreds + hours under cars and hoods, but I guess I'm still a real engine novice definately humbling lol. Hopefully this lesson isnt a really tough one.
thanks again guys. After I learn more I plan to go down in 1 or 2 says with parts and tools and bring her back home. Hopefully I didnt screw her up worse then that Shes almost turned to 200,000. Wanna celebrate another birthday with my baybeh adventure car!!!
