Transfer case stuck in low range ML500

Transfer case stuck in low range ML500
Here is my problem. Last week I headed out and decided to engage low range on the transfer case sense I had only done it once sense purchasing in Feb.
Well it engaged but when I went to disengage it stayed in low range. I parked it until a Amazon motor arrived on Sunday.
I installed the new motor and the same thing. I manually shifted out of low and reinstalled the original motor.
Been driving it until today and did some testing. I pulled the original motor out and took it apart. I looks good and runs in both directions. I greased the gear and put everything back together.
Reinstalled and tested. It shifts into low but now it gets stuck between low and high. If I turn off the engine and restart it is back in low range.
I get a P1831 code.
My thought is it's the encoder not the gearmotor.
AND Second thought the Amazon motor is bad as well.
PS after thought. when starting it would flash 18 times low range at start up

Tried the above and it is still stuck in low range. If i push the button light goes out but ML will not move. If I turn it off and restart light comes back on and it is in low range. Cycled 5+ time with no change. IT IS STILL IN LOW RANGE

Pulled the motor out and took it apart. The rotation stop bumpers were worn and the pin on the pinion gear was getting stuck. Need new motor. I ordered a Dorman motor hoping it will be better quality
