Awful AM Radio reception

Hi all;
Besides the occasional FM stereo/mono switching, my radio (std. Bose) on the '01 ML430 has terrible AM reception. In my other cars, I can get some stations from NY to Philly. With the ML the AM stations fade in and out, or have so much interference I can't hear squat. Question is: Is this normal. or do I have bad antenna conn's., or bad antenna switch?

Much appreciate suggestions/fixes

In the liftgate area their is a AM/FM signal spliter and their is a signal booster, if these wires are connected wrong or if your signal booster has went out you could get this problem. Autogunner.
