ML slow gauge response before start

ML slow gauge response before start

We've had an ongoing problem with batteries failing and stranding us.
So far, our totally honest mechanic has replaced the battery (Interstate brand) 3 times and the alternator twice. He disconnected the factory audio/nav when seeing excessive current drain.
Today, it stranded us again. It will jump start perfectly and allow us to get to the shop. Our mechanic now believes it's a series of bad batteries and has now installed a Bosch.
We've had issues with rodents under the hood and have replaced the entire harness under insurance repair. No sign of rodents since.
I did notice that when I turn the key to the on position (before engaging the starter) the fuel and temp gauge take about 3 seconds to register a reading.
We're about to dump this vehicle so timely help is so appreciated!
