This assumes even wear on all pads....
Sorry to disagree with our very knowledgable friend MBTECH208, but on some ML's there is the danger that one of the pads (which does not have a sensor wire) is more worn than the pad (with sensor) which is causing the light to come on.
Therefore if in doubt, I'd suggest you check all pads visually for wear before making a long journey - otherwise you may land up with metal on metal and a bill for new rotors :-(

I mention this because this is nearly what happened on my '00 ML430 - but in my case the wear sensor light was not even lit (probably had another 1000 miles to go), but other pads were just about shot with less than 100 miles left.
Maybe your ML has sensors on all pads ? Something I think all ML's would benefit from.
