Question: Can an unlock code be looked up by the radio's serial number, rather than the VIN?
My 2014 ML350 main screen went blank, actually it started turning off and on, finally not at all. Local Sarasota MB dealer initially told me it was the screen ($2,000 to replace), subsequently determined it was the radio head unit, ($5,100 to replace). I cut my losses at the $270 diagnostic fee. The service manage Shawn was very nice, and suggested going to local car audio outfits where they could hook me up with something nice for ~$1,000
Instead I found a nearly equivalent Radio head unit on-line that came from a 2015 ML350 ($450) and I connected it up without too much difficulty and the screen came on! The radio picked up a local station, but then the dreaded "Anti-theft protection activated. Service Required." message displayed on the screen.
I have the VIN of the car it came from and called MB directly and the Local MB dealer but both said that no unlock code is associated with that VIN (but it was for a 2015 ML350).
