2000 ML430 instrument Cluster Tach oscillation

Hello.

I have an issue with the tach fluttering when the vehicle is being started and shut down. On startup, the tach needle vibrates for 5-10 seconds and the other needles do not startup until the oscillation stops (most notably fuel level). There are no issues while driving but later when I shut down, the osciallation/vibration happens again for another 5-10 seconds before turning off.

i just had a service B at the dealership and they said battery was tested and is fine although somewhat borderline. The battery is not OEM and has been installed installed over 5 years ago. There is no real diagnostic/calibration they can do according to service manager. They would just recommend replace although the instrument cluster doesn’t appear to be made anymore.

furthermore, I would not opt to replace the gauge unless absolutely necessary as I want to keep original odometer reading.

does anyone have recommendations or seen anything like this?
