I bought the ML320 (year 2000) in the states and imported it here in the United Kingdom. I have tried to get a CD that will work with the nav system (CD-ROM) here in the uk but found out that the nav is incompatible with the UK CD's. Does anyone has a solution to this problem? Mercedes have been very unhelful.

To get it to work in the UK you will have to replace the MCS system with a Command system that has the Nav built in. MCS is used only in N America with a Nav option. This nav option supports only CD's that are for the US and Canada.

ML430 (used to, now X5 4.4.i)
There is no solution to your issue. I have a 2000 US ML430 w/ MCS (came with us in a move to Germany) and I am just in the process of buying a Comand. Also, I will be looking for a CD changer and optical connection since Comand does not support the copperwire driven CD changer.
I hadgiven myself two options, buy a Blaupunk NAV (the one in my Audi is excellent) or a Comand. I found a Comand and will go that route mostly coz it is OEM and will enhance the value of the car when it is time to sell.
AFAIK, the MCS is a 'cheapo' version of the Comand system (w/o RDS and dual tuner for TP) and differs substantially from the Comand. Also, the radio doesn't work since US FM freq. are only odd numbers and here we use .05 increments rather than .2MHz.
