HID conversion or best bulbs for 99 ML

HID conversion or best bulbs for 99 ML
Want some input on either going with an HID conversion for my 99 ML320.
Last August, I put in a set of PIAA X-Treme White Plus (4000's) and after 6 months, 1 went out. Got my money back for the set, and am now looking at my options. Is there a better than stock replacement bulb, epsecially for the low beam that works better with good life span? I am weighing the option of HID lights, but will need to update the lamp assembly, since the reflectors in the 99's will not work well just putting in the HID system.
Anyone have experience with a changeover, as far as what year headlight assembly will bolt in, accepting the upgrade?
I read a past post about a group buy, but the end result is true, that just installing HID upgrades will make the low beam too bright, blinding other drivers and irritating twitchy cops.
