just a thought: why is it that US cars always get yellow sidelamps, whereas cars elsewhere get clear lenses? i don't mean the turn indicators, but the small yellow lights next to the headlamps. is it a regulatory issue?

Yes, it's US safety standards for vehicles. Specifically, Federal Code of Regulations, Title 49, Volume 5, Standard 571.108.
