W164 Wind & Road Noise

I'm currently looking at replacing my 2004 ML500 with either the 2007 ML500 or ML320CDI.

One of my major gripes with the old W163 is the excessive wind and road noise that the vehicle had. I've test driven the current ML500 and it seems to be quieter however a reasonably short test drive isn't the same as daily use.

Is there anyone out there that has longer term experience with both the old and new ML that can verify that these problems have been adequately dealt with?

Thanks.

Glenn

ML 350-Black=Sold. New 08 C300 4Matic, Black/Black, P1, Ipod, Auto7speed, 10/10 hit 100,000 miles
I did not have the old ML but the new ML350 2006 is the quietest auto I have been in, it's quieter than my friends new E-Class!

Had 2 old ML's, 98 ML320 amd an 02 ML500. The 98 had some wind noise but the 02 was quiet. My 06 which I have had since last Sept is very quiet.

The W164 is infinitely better than the W163. I had a '98, but still, the new one is very refined. Check in the rear wheel wells and see the carpet-like material to avoid noise from rocks and such. There's that attention to detail thoughout. The optional roof rack rails add some wind noise, though. I have the 19' wheels/Airmatic and the comfort is very good.

I've had plenty of other problems (tranny, "visit workshop" messages, rattles, ESP coming on for no reason), but wind noise isn't one of them. It's the quietest car I've ever had. (Maybe too quiet - I like some sense of what the engine is doing.)

In fact it's the quietness of the car that makes minor blemishes such as air con noise (check for that from the left hand side), some suspension bumps and creaks and subtle rattles obvious. In another car you would probably not hear these things at all.

I have an 04 ML as well and the road noise just drives me crazy . I complained so much that my dealer replaced the front windscreen in hope of fixing the problem. Now my husband is planing on trading up my suv to the new 07 S class. We have not gone for a test drive yet but I am loving all the comments I've read about the car. It will certainly be good birthday present regardless.
