When to expect VIN on a special order
Hi
I placed an order for a 2007 ML320 CDI on Thursday with a 21 June delivery date, and now one of the dealers who didn't get my sale is insisting that if they can't give me the VIN, I'm being ripped off (insisting that there is NO way anyone could get a 2007--he could only special order a 2008). He is becoming a pest.
I find his scenarios unlikely, but am curious when those of you who special ordered obtained your VINs.

It is true. Vin are assigned at production. I am not sure what the exact time is in Vance, but it takes about 4-5 days to complete production. A late June delivery could very well be a car only produced in late May or early June.
April builds are the last of the 07's in our inventory as well. If it's a real car they can fax or show you the PO number. If it starts with 08, it's an 08, if it starts with 07, it's a 07.

My paperwork has the PO, and it starts with 07. I misspoke above....it is scheduled for production during the week of 21 June and I will take delivery some time around 4 July. My sales rep told me we'd have the VIN the last week in June.
Everything checks out ....
.....except why the "sour grapes"" sales rep is trying to get me fired up with his VIN story....and I don't need to solve that one!
From my research, I believe the first 2008s will be produced in July, as I had an offer for a 2008 special order with a production date the first week in July (with an August delivery).

My dealer also shows production of 2008's starting in early July. But my 2007 GL320 is also scheduled for early July build, along with other 07 GLs and MLs that are going to my dealer. The sales manager claims that the 08's will probably be pushed out a couple of months due to the backlog of 07's waiting to be built.
