Altitude display says zero.....

Hello -- picked up my CDI on 3 July (still can't believe that vehicle in the driveway is MINE!).

I have the Navigation package, but when I show Compass on the COMAND display, the altitude always shows zero. Manual says it should be showing altitude, but does not seem to tell me what to do if it is not displaying properly.

Can anyone help?

It seems the altitude is calculated by the GPS location, not by an altimeter.
When you go to a mountainous area it will display altitude.

And it's not very sensitive. I think it only shows to the closest 100 ft, which is pretty much useless.

Keep in mind that there are very few hills in NJ except the western part of the state. Most all else is about sea level which would read 0.

I'm from the GL forum, but I believe the COMMAND units are the same in the MLs and GLs. Anyway, the altitude does read more than increments of 100 ft. I think that the altitude where I live was like 725 ft.

Thanks everyone!!

The Manual says it should show from -328 ft to 19,680 ft (whew!).

Mine just says zero, both digitally and graphically--with 7 satellites. The elevation here should be pretty close to 131 ft (McGuire AFB runway elevation)

Obviously, no big deal--I imagine something was not initialized properly. If anyone thinks of something I can do, please let me know.

Course--this is also a great excuse to "make sure" by going on a road trip!!!

It could be just the nature of the beast. I've had a couple inexpensive Magellan units and the Roadmate 2000 altimeter was only accurate to within 100', yet the Roadmate 2200 is much more accurate (it seems to be within about 5' unless I'm inside my garage in which case it mysteriously starts "climbing"). Both of those Magellan units were tracking 20 satellites at the time.

I do not believe that Mcguire's elevation is as high as you state. Even if it is the surrounding area could certainly be a lot less. I flew in and out of McGuire years ago doing military charters and I do not recall it being that high. In addition keep in mind that in most all aircraft with GPS the systems give altitude but in no way is the info accurate enough to allow you to use the info for flight purposes.

I have the same system. It is always on Zero until the elevation becomes higher than 200 meters (600 ft). My area is between 70 and 240 meters above sea levels. By contrast my BMW NAV shows the altitude digitally in graduations of 10 meters (30 ft) anytime anywhere. The BMW NAV Altitude was very precise near Landmarks where the altitude was marked precisely by Land Surveyors and Scientists, such as Telescope Sites. We previously used those sites to calibrate ancient portable Altimeters which were superseded by the portable GPS. Now I use the BMW Navigation with confidence for that purpose. Notice that the scale on MB's Command was not designed for precise data but only to approximate the elevation. Hence we should not expect it to deliver more than its Design Objective. Probably version 2.0 will be more precise.

Got it from the IFR Supp--live on base. But appreciate the GPS accuracy issue...and y'all make excellent points. It's a gee whiz toy--I'll just have to drive north to watch it work.

Get ahold of an approach plate, either Jeppeson or the Fed one and that will give you the airport elevation.

Amazing!............Considering there are but 24 GPS satellites evenly spaced around the globe. Most receivers on earth can receive a max of 8 at any given time........
