Diesels are great!

Taking delivery of a 2008 ML320CDI on Monday. I have owned the diesel Mercedes previous to this one. I have had 3 300TD wagons 1981, 1984, 1987. Since I have been driving a 2000 ML320. I couldn't tell you how excited I am for this particular MB. Took one for a lengthy test drive today and was utterly amazed. The thing is quieter than my 2000!

Well I thought I would chime into this thread, and introduce myself at the very least!

320CDI hard to find??

Why are the ML diesels so hard to find. The dealerships around here always have E's or an occasional R on the lot but never an ML. What gives? Do you have to order it first?

What we did is told the dealer what we wanted and they were able to locate one 30 miles away. We were ready to order, but they found the one we wanted. They're pretty good at locating the vehicle you want.

diesel fuel cost?

Diesel in N.Y. costs 3.59/gal. How does that compare to gas/mileage/cost. Is it worth the extra $1000. cost over gas?. Can you use reg. or medium gas in m350?

The gas models require premium fuel. However I would suggest that you drive a diesel to determine if it is for you. It shouldn't come down to just the cost of the fuel factor as maintanence for the gas vs diesel is more expensive for the diesel. The driving dynamics are very different between the two. A diesel makes a ton of low end torque and feels different to drive as it doesn't need to shift down to make useable power at crusing speeds where a gas motor will need to downshift to do the same. Buy a diesel if torque is what you like the feel of when you drive.
I can't stress enough that you just need to test drive for a length of time a diesel to determine if it is the power production dynamics that suit your driving style.
I wouldn't have any other suv then a diesel but that just me.

Diesel here is a $3.59 as well.. (suburb of Chicago)

I also drive a Silverado, gasoline, not diesel.

Feel my pain?

Thumbs up mpg

So far combined is almost 25mpg!
But it costs almost $75 to fill the tank.
Still loving the mpg, only 3 miles less per gallon than my '05 Mini Cooper S but a whole lot bigger.

Ha if you lived in Norway I very much doubt you will ever see a petrol ML, come to think of it you will hardly ever see a new petrol anything, last year over 90% of new vehicles sold in Norway were diesel.

I would like an ML 280CDI, with the draconian speed laws in this country the 280 has almost the same performance as the 320 but cost a lot less.

Same thing in italy..its really tough to find unleaded (verde) cars..which is funny because over here its tough to find the car you want in diesel..

Hey CDI owners, how is your MPG under these two types of conditions:

1) all highway, crusing at 80 MPH
2) mixed city/highway, with highway driving 60%+

Whatever car you buy, you need to test it. I was looking for a ML350 but a dealer sak me to test drive a ML320cdi.
After i tested it, it is a lot better!
Last week, I install a powerchip in my car, i think it is even faster than ML500 or even ML550, it is 600Nm!!
And have full tank, run 400km and still have half tank!!

i am confused...epa for 350 = 17mpg
cdi = 21mpg combined.

diesel costs $3.59
gas $3.39

not much of a difference?

Yes...but avg gas cost is $500 less per year on the CDI

On a side note, I average 21.x mpg on my 98 ML320 when it's said to be 15/20, same as the 08 ML350 which is currently averaging a bit lower at 17-19mpg ...it better shoot up to 20 after it's broken in etc

I too am considering the ML320 CDI, actually think I'm pretty much sold on it. As soon as I sell my current SUV I'm getting one.

Question- is it true that diesels get BETTER gas mileage at HIGHER SPEED??

Also, if anyone knows, why do people leave their diesel engines running so much?? I've got a farmer friend who leaves his diesel running while he naps in the afternoons? Is it cheaper to just leave a diesel running?? Silly question, but curious.

ML350
I just traded my wife's 2006 ML350 for a 2008 CDI, and she loves it...
shes getting right around 23 mpg as opposed to around 50k miles on the old model at about 18.4. Around NJ diesel runs about 10% more than premium, and shes getting more than 25% better mileage...

Also the transmission isnt as hurky jerky as the 350...when coming to a stop at slow speeds, the truck doesnt jerk from 2nd to 1st.

Its great off the line, and to be honest the sound isnt that much louder, and certainly not in the cabin...

just thought id throw in my 2c as a first poster...
