Front seat adjustment

Is there a way, via mechanical &/or software ajustment, that the driver's seat (with memory presets) of the 2006/7 ML's can be made to slide back further to allow more legroom ?

The rails on which the seat moves front/back are part of the seat.

(You can see this for yourself.)

First, inspect to verify that seat does in fact move all the way back on the rails.

If it does, your only solution is to move the entire unit back, which is nearly impossible, as you'll need new threaded inserts welded to your floorpan. It's a MAJOR safety issue.

FYI, the front seats without the 3 memory settings can slide much further back than the front seats with the memory settings, and I do not know why.
I have tried both, and my MB dealer agrees.
