Trailer Hitch for 07 ML500

I asked dealer to install a trailer hitch while the car was in for service.
The message was:
46558 Not avail at this time.

The service tech said it was temporally on hold.

Assuming it was available...
Anyone know the scoop on this?
Is it mechanical or electrical?

It's probably because there's a current safety recall to repair all the currently installed trailer hitches.

what's the diff between this and the tow package? i had called a dealer (i'm considering a used ml) and was told that the vehicle had to be built with the tow package and could not be retrofitted. thanks!

I got the impression it may be more an issue of programming or electronics then mechanical.

I was kind of surprised that it will cost about $1700.00 when it was about $500.00 for my 03 ML500. I thought I heard the service tech say something about X dollars for reprogramming of something or other.
