Air Filter Interval?

I first changed the engine air filters on my 2007 ML320CDI at 25k miles. They were so dirty with bugs, pollen and dirt that I'm surprised the engine was able to breathe. That change also made a difference in engine performance.

Not sure when you want to do it on the gas model, but in my diesel model, I now change them every 15000 miles. Reason is that the turbocharger sucks the air through the 2 little tubes by the grill before the filters, and it seems that all debris, bugs and small bird also are sucked up through there. Usually when I open the air boxes where the filter inserts are, I am surprised the engine even starts with what I find.
It's not that difficult to change them, and they are fairly inexpensive.

Not yet looking to upgrade the performance of mine, so it is still stock. I am sure the air filters and the intake snorkels could be redesigned to be more efficient and user friendly! Maybe one day.
