86K 2007 ML350 - when to change the timing belt & gas cap?
Im going to be a proactive and get the plugs changed in the next few months. While our ML is having this done I thought to have the timing belt replaced. As it is all out in the open it appears to be an easy job to replace it. A few questions:
+ Estimated cost for replacing plugs & the belt?
+ As with my 1991 MB 190 does the idler wheel need replaced?
+ My Check Engine light stays on but goes off every once in a while after I fill the tank; this leads me to believe its time to replace the gas cap. Any commentary on this welcome.
Hope to keep this ML for as long as our 1991 190 (216K miles)....any other longevity tips welcome...

The belt tensioner and idler pulleys can last a lifetime; I have 180,000 miles on my 2000 MB and still have the original tensioner & idler pulleys.
I replace the serpentine belt every 80,000 or when it has visible wear and/or cracking.
The belt is an easy DIY project to change.
The CEL should be diagnosed to determine the cause before attempting any repair. Why take the chance that you guessed right instead of knowing what is wrong?
