86K 2007 ML350 - when to change the timing belt & gas cap?

Hi MB World posters...

Im going to be a proactive and get the plugs changed in the next few months. While our ML is having this done I thought to have the timing belt replaced. As it is all out in the open it appears to be an easy job to replace it. A few questions:

+ Estimated cost for replacing plugs & the belt?

+ As with my 1991 MB 190 does the idler wheel need replaced?

+ My Check Engine light stays on but goes off every once in a while after I fill the tank; this leads me to believe its time to replace the gas cap. Any commentary on this welcome.

Hope to keep this ML for as long as our 1991 190 (216K miles)....any other longevity tips welcome...

There is no timing belt, it has a chain which usually lasts until the engine requires overhaul. If you are speaking of the serp belt tensioner it should be replaced when it gets noisey. As for the gas cap, never had to replace one. If you have a CEL thats lit you should have it correctly diagnosed with the STAR system instead of just throwing parts at it. Cause could be one or more of numerous things.

SOSH is dead on with his reply....

The belt tensioner and idler pulleys can last a lifetime; I have 180,000 miles on my 2000 MB and still have the original tensioner & idler pulleys.

I replace the serpentine belt every 80,000 or when it has visible wear and/or cracking.

The belt is an easy DIY project to change.

The CEL should be diagnosed to determine the cause before attempting any repair. Why take the chance that you guessed right instead of knowing what is wrong?
