I have to agree that changing oil at 3k is a bit of a wast. Oil does not lose it's viscosity properties unless it over heated to the point of Coking... about 500+ degrees.
Our last SUV and the three before all had over 200k on them and none of them had any engine problems related to oil, with changes happening at Manufactures recommendations or vehicles oil life sensing systems calling for a change. Ranging from 7k to as high as 13k.

Not only is oil changing at 3K miles a waste, it's hard on your engine, as oil improves with age.

21st century concepts few are aware of. Of course if you just follow manufacturer specification (a different word than recommendation) you'll be fine. You do NOT know more than the manufacturer.
