How to install Navigation for 2009 ML350

I just bought 2009 ML 350 from VW dealership. They told me that there is no navigation in the car. When I press on 'Navi' button compas comes up, but no navigation. On the command unit there is no option for navigation. I called MB dealership to find out weither this car has Navigation pre-installed. MB run my VIN through the system and said that this car has navigation.

I read other posts about navigation and looks like everything I need in on the harddrive of the Command unit. Can someone tell me what do I need to do to install navigation? Is it the matter of buying the software disk and installing it or do I need to have additional hardware installed?

Thanks,
Michael

2009, you still have warranty then? why not just take it to the dealer who told you that you have nav and check it out? if your command has no "nav"option, likely it doesn't have the nav installed. there is another thread about that couple weeks ago- no nav, just compass. wonder what they found out.

I am sure dealership will charge me the full price whether I have the right parts or not. I thought that if this is the matter of adding antenna and install the disc the whole thing would cost me $300-400. Any idea what the cost is?

i meant for them to check it out under warranty. shouldn't cost you a penny. do you have reverse camera and sunroof? if you do, you likely have p1 which should inc nav. if so, then they should "fix" it for you. if not, or if you don't have p1/nav, then you should be able to find a used command on ebay for about 4-500. don't think you need a antenna. should be plug and play. my w164 was a plug and play, just add nav (not even the whole command). the latest ones are hd based i think. not sure about earlier ones. you can post/pm your vin# here. people with epc can verify for you. or you can sign up for epc here for free:

https://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/home.jsp

and check it yourself. hope that helps.

of course you can. adding nav should not be difficult or expensive when you can find a used one on ebay. adding factory back up camera is another story. read this:

I called MB dealership and service advisor told me that if I did not have factory installed navigation originally i would not be able to add navigation at all for this '09 model of ML350. It does not make any sense to me. He told me that I can't buy new or used Command unit with navigation that will work for me. Is it because of the wiring?

i would call a couple of other dealership to confirm that. doesn't sound logical to not able to add nav even that's when dvd went to hd nav. my post earlier was meant to say w163 instead of w164. i added nav to my 2002 ml320 and my current 2011 ml350 has p1. good luck.

2010 GL 350 Bluetec
My 2009 ML320 does not have NAV but my 2010 GL350 does. In the ML, I have a small Garmin unit that frankly it is better than the MB OEM Navigation on the GL. I wouldn't mess around with trying to retrofit your ML, just get a small portable unit ($100-$150). I have a NAV unit holder that fits right into one of the cup holders and I simply plug it in to the 12V DC plug under the glove box. It works fine and when I park it, I just throw a baseball cap over the unit to keep it from being noticed by malcontents.

Hey V12, let me know what hardware do I need to buy: Do I need completely new Command unit with Navigation and installation disk or do I need something else? I think there is difference between Command units for years 2009 and prior.

wish i can help. don't know any more than you. 2009 is when the nav went to HD. like i said, call a couple of dealers and ask them how much is it to add nav and what's involved. maybe some experts on this forum can chime in? this is why i miss the w163 forum-lots of diys and knowledge sharing experts.

ps. it's not v12 anymore, it's v6 hybrid now good luck. will post if i find out more.
