ML350 trany won't shift

I have a 2007 ML350 and recently it started having issues. It starts just fine and drives fine for a while, but often after a stop (e.g. at a stoplight) it gets stuck in the first gear and won't shift for a while. Other times, during a stop it gets stuck in the second or third gear so that after the stop when I press the gas pedal I can hear the engine trying to excellerate but the car moves extremely slow until it gets to 20-30 mph and then it starts excellerating just fine. In both cases I have to shut off the car for a few seconds and usually when I start it back up it goes fine. However sometimew when I start it back up and shift into 'Drive' the car jerks pretty hard and often the issue remains so I have to shut it off again.

Looking through the posts, looks like others have had similar issues so I'm wondering whether anybody was able to find out what the actual problem was and what it takes to fix it. Any advise?
Thanks.
