Filling AdBlue

I'm approaching 10000 miles in my 2012 ML350 and am starting to think about adding AdBlue prior to bringing the car in for its 10000 mile maintenance. I've purchased 3 2.5 gallon containers of the stuff and have heard that I can get a 1+ liter screw bottle from a VW dealer at a reasonable price. I'm interested to hear about the process of refilling that smaller bottle from the larger container and the potential problems I might run into. Advise is appreciated.

I bought the litre bottle from MB. Just cut the seal and refill. Nothing to worry about, the adblue is not poison.

You can buy a 1/2gal AdBlue from M-B ($8.99) and empty it into the DEF tank.
Then cut a slit on the base of the bottle cap (Blue top) to enable you to remove the top.
Now you can refill the 1/2gal bottle from a bulk DEF container and use it to refill the tank without any spillage.
It's very easy and fast and a lot cheaper than getting the dealer to refill your DEF tank.

Pretty comprehensive response DC-IT. Thanks a lot for taking the time.

You're welcome.
BTW, your ML is a 2012 (W166) so the AdBlue refill is not in the same location as the W164. It's beside the fuel refill intake which is more convenient.

How's your W166 BT? Does it have the slight bucking/hesitation as some are experiencing over at the W166 forum?
I am considering a W166 BT when my lease is up in mid 2014.

Cheers.

Hey DC-IT, thanks again. Yup, I know where the AdBlue fill is. And yes, there have been a couple of occasions on a cold morning here in the Boston suburbs where the diesel has, for a very brief period, usually within 100 feet of the driveway, shown a lack of consistency accelerating. But quite honestly it's so brief that I find it negligible - and then it completely disappears. I'll see what the dealer has to say when I bring it in at 10,000... With that minor exception the car has, to date, performed admirably. I'm towing at 5+K lb. boat and it's a breeze.

I'm sure it will become much clearer about where to make the slit below the blue cap once I have the bottle in hand, but no leaks, right?

Just use a knife to cut a 1/2" slit at the base of the blue cap.
This will then let you unscrew the blue cap from the bottle so you can refill it from the bulk DEF.
So far no leaks when I refill.
It's even better for your W166 as the refill is on the outside of the vehicle.
In my W164 it's inside the trunk so any spills would be messy!
