Tint tickets on your CPO?

Anyone ever got a tint ticket from a Certified Pre Owned you bought with tints already on it. What steps do you take to handle the ticket? I live in the NY area.

You take the tint off.

I assume someone aftermarket tinted the front windows.

A CPO should have had the tint removed. A CPO vehicle should be as close to factory fresh as possible. I would consult MBUSA. Also, the dealer should have never sold it to you if the tints were illegal.

I think you may be overselling what they do for a CPO car.

I agree that they should not sell it if it was tinted too dark, but in some places dark tint is common (even if illegal).

Tint laws are by state, did you buy it in-state?

Your more than likely going to need pictures from the date of purchase showing that their was tint on the front windows before you bought it. Otherwise they think you had the tint done yourself after the purchase.

Some dealers offer tinting services on front windows, tail lights, etc.

In my opinion, pay the ticket (its not much anyways), leave the tint on (will look better than no tint).

Not sure about a CPO but when I requested that the fronts be tinted to match the rear windows on my ML's both times I was asked to sign a waiver by the dealer.

The waiver basically said that I understood that the tint may not conform to state laws and I don't hold the dealer responsible for any tickets, fines etc.

I guess I have been lucky because since 1999 I have had SUV's and always had the front windows tinted to match the rears and never once got a ticket or warning in or around the NYC area.

Now in my cars I have been warned maybe twice in 15 years but never given a ticket, I usually never go lower than 35% tint on the cars.

It looks like tint laws in NY are 70%, which basically means no tint is allowed. I'm guessing you weren't aware of the tint laws?

Also, dealerships and professional tint shops cannot be given a ticket for tinting your windows beyond the allowed state limit. The liability sits with the owner of the vehicle, even if the tint was applied before they purchased the car, or even magically shown up without them knowing.

If the ticket really bothers you a lot, you COULD have the tint removed from your vehicle. You could then try to explain in court that it came on the used car you purchased from the dealership, and that you didn't know it was illegal. That would be your best shot.

EDIT: After browsing on Mercedes Benz Manhattan (bigger NY city dealership I could think of), there are many CPO's for sale with front windows tinted. Yours doesn't seem to be a special case. AKA removing window tint isn't part of a CPO inspection or anything.
