Replacing Windshield with Infrared glass
A rock has damaged my windshield, so I'm about to look into having it replaced (no deductible comprehensive claim in SC). I have the standard windshield in my 2008 ML320 CDI. I live in a hot climate, so if possible I'd like to replace the windshield with the infrared glass that was available with the Premium III package for my model year. Does anyone see any possible problems with this as far as compatibility goes?
According to the Startek EPC database, the existing part number for my windshield is A164 670 04 01. Using a VIN from a 2008 ML230 CDI with PIII package, indicates a part number of A164 670 02 01 for the infrared windshield. I'm hoping I can just give that part number to the installer and request the infrared glass.
Thanks for any input.

MBWorld Fanatic!
While I have no experience with doing such a retrofit, it certainly sounds interesting and I'd love to hear your comments if you decide to go for it.

Out Of Control!!
When I was shopping for my GL, one I was looking at had a damaged windshield, so I did some checking.
MB only wanted to put in the original but an aftermarket shop quoted either OEM or aftermarket and either regular or IR blocking, either blue or brown, so I would guess it is just a matter of what gets ordered.
Ended up with a different car so never finished the deal.
It might be a different color than the other glass if you care.
P.S. I thought the IR blocking was blue because that is what my E has, but my GL is also IR blocking and is brown tint.

Former Vendor of MBWorld
Here is an alternative - Spectra PhotoSync Nano Tint - blocks out up to 98.5% of IR (infrared) rays and comes as light as 75% VLT (factory glass by comparison is approximately 85%-89% VLT)

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I'll have to see if they want to repair or replace it. If they want to replace, I'm going to ask for the IR windshield, but if they just repair it, I may look into the Nano tint.

if you push from inside right where the chip is, it will most likely crack.
Not that I am suggesting you crack it to get a windshield under insurance.
Just reminding you that if you are cleaning the windshield before you get it fixed you want to be extra careful.
