ML350 steering wheel vibration at 65 and humming noise

Changed tires and rotated again just to make sure the issue is not related to tires. the vehicle has 135,000 and about a month ago we started to hear a whirling noise as speed increases and at 65 mph the steering wheel develops a vibration not a shake. Under load (slight incline)the vibration almost goes away and also as the steering passes neutral (dead straight neither R or L) the vibration stops? I am leaning towards a drive axle CV joint issue? any thoughts?

We had an 06 ML350 that started doing this at 72k, took it MB and there was metal in the transfer case, front. I traded it on the spot for an 09 ml...the difference between the 06 and the later year MLs are very noticable. The newer one feels much tighter.

Does the vibration/noise stop when you let off the gas?
