Replaced Crankshaft and Camshaft position sensors
Several months ago I had to replace my Crankshaft position sensor.
I had the typical symptoms of cranking but taking an extra second or so to start. Once, I drove the car to a store and came back out about 10 mins later, car would crank, but not start. After about another 10 mins, car started. Location of the CPS is driver's side at the very back, cannot see it, I had to use a mirror and flashlight to visualize it. It takes E8 torx with a foot long extension. Also, I had to bend the heat shield away from the CPS to get to the screw. I have to say, it's a bear to get to it. It took me about 3 hours to get it out. Replaced it with a part from local Advance Auto $35.... big mistake, car misfired horribly... I had to go to the dealer and get a MB ($185) CPS. I think you can buy one online bosch for about $50. After all that, car ran smooth, starts up quick, problem solved.
Camshaft position Sensor Replacement 2006 ML500 117K miles
Couple of days ago, my car started to feel jerky coming to a stop. Yesterday, when I am coming to a complete stop, engine would almost cut off, all the warning lights would flash for a second and rpm would shoot up and keep the engine running. This happened several times to a point I was scared to come to a complete stop. I went to the dealer yesterday, bought a Camshaft position sensor $185 + tax... they originally wanted $235, when I complained about the price, he gave me $50 discount.... You can order online for about $50-70. Anyway, I didn't want to wait.
This is easy to get to, location is passenger side front of the engine. Again, E8 torx socket, 15min to replace, drove 200 miles today, ran without any stalling, hesitation... problem solved.
