Warranty advice needed - comprehensive or powertrain?
I have had a couple of problems with the car, and wanted to secure an extended warranty of some sort for the next few years. I anticipate keeping the car for at least 3-4 years. Problems were
1. O2 sensor fail - $600 repair covered by factory warranty
2. Bluetec heater fail - $1800 repair covered by factory warranty
Here is the dilemma - the two options I've narrowed it down to are a comprehensive warranty, and another with exclusions.
I'm not really worried about the GPS etc. in the exclusions of the less expensive option, but the emissions section is of concern. I've owned a few German cars and sensors seem to be the biggest failboat riders of all parts of the car. The 'emissions' exclusion section is riddled with sensors.
So, the question is, what would your advice be? Get the full warranty, or save $1000? Do you have any experience with failures on this exclusion list, and if so, what was it and what was the approximate cost of repair/replacement?
Thanks
1. comprehensive warranty that covers as the new car factory warranty would; 5 year 60,000 additional miles
(approximately $4000)
2. for $900 less with same mileage/time terms, a warranty that EXCLUDES the following...
programming is only covered when covered part is replaced.
On/off switch.
wiring harness; Software updates or programming is only covered when covered part is replaced.
Barometric pressure sensor; Canister purge solenoid; Deceleration valve; EGR recirculation system; EGR/EFE
thermal vacuum switch; EGR/EFE valve; Engine oil fill cap; Fuel fill pipe and cap; Fuel fill neck restrictor; Fuel
receptacle; Fuel sensor; Fuel tank pressure control valve (PCV); Fuel temperature sensor; Idle air control valve;
Intake air resonator; Intake air temperature sensor; Intake manifold; Manifold air pressure (MAP) sensor;
Mass air flow sensor; Oil/air separator; Oxygen sensor; PCV system; Positive crankcase; ventilation valve;
Powertrain control module (PCM); Secondary air injection system and throttle body assembly (MFI).
phone; (manufacturer installed only); Software updates or programming is only covered when covered part is
replaced.
