New to foreign cars, please help

I'm considering getting a ml320 1999-2001 (I really like the body style) I live in oakland California so I don't have to deal with harsh weather or anything. I've heard many different things about this truck more so good than bad. I'm a college student making 12$ and hour 40 hours a week. Realistically speaking based on you guys' experiences can I afford to keep this car on the road. I don't want to put myself in a hole
I figure if I keep up with the Maintenance I should have minimal to no problems

You'll want to post this in the W-163 forum.

In my opinion you'll be better off with another, more affordable brand.

A big NO!!! These are not reliable cars and they are EXPENSIVE to maintain even if you do some of the work yourself. A typical repair-not even a major repair, could set you back a month's pay OR MORE. The first generation ML's (1998-2005) are plagued with problems, and keeping up with the maintenance will NOT save you huge inevitable repair bills-almost guaranteed. They also have poor mpg, around 15-20, and use premium fuel. The diesel ML's are even more unreliable and expensive to feed. I can almost guarantee you, that you WILL put yourself in the hole if you get one of these. Do you self a favor-stick with Honda/Toyota for now, and save some of your hard earned money.

Also, a car built in Alabama isn't exactly "foreign" in Kalifornia.
