2010 W164 LED Tail Light Woes

I recently purchased a beautiful 2010 ML550 (my first Benz) with LED lights. My problem is the left rear tail light will switch from a steady flash to a sporadic-partial flash every so often. It has occured wet, dry, running lights on, everything off, with no apparent common trigger. Sometimes after a 'wait' period it seems to reset itself and flashes normally. Only to trip again and give me a "left rear light trouble" signal on the dash.

I first tried to dig into the light and a few times I would unplug the light assy and it would re-set. That doesn't seem to work with any consistancy now. I've noticed that a couple of the LEDs are out along the middle of the light assy. I've also read on this wonderful forum that the rear sam (located in the well of the right rear light) is prone to getting wet and has proven to be a problem. As I mentioned above, my irratic light performance occures wet or dry.

In the old days when a flasher relay unit would go bad you could sometimes hear the change in the flasher unit as it failed...well I swear it almost sounds like the frequency of the flash slowly changes until it stops working and the crazy flash is back.

Is there a flasher unit up under the dash? Maybe this is just a tired flasher?

Any help would be appreciated....thanks.

Our cars don't have a "flasher". It is all controlled by the SAM.

The dash light will blink fast when a bulb is out, just like an old car, but the remaining good light will blink at the normal rate. (Computers, ain't they the kicks?)
