What should I look out for when buying a W164? / What are the common problems?

Hi all,

Basically I'm looking to replace the missus' car, and found that the second hand value of the W164 seems to be much better than the X5 and Q7. But are they cheap for a reason?

What should I look out for when viewing them? And what are the common problems that I should pay particular attention to?

Are there any must-have options? What are the big bills when it comes to maintenance?

Essentially any info appreciated. It's the pre-facelift ML280 CDi that we're interested in.

2008 ML320cdi Irid.silver, 2013 VW Jetta Prem. Tdi Dsg red
Oil cooler seal leaks (located on top of motor in valley, but leaks seen below if bell cover removed), power steering rack problems, front diff. bearings. MB changed around 2011-2012 from orange rubber seals to purple Viton seals which are way better. I have an 08. After getting leaks fixed, it's been trouble free.

Also the central door locking may not completely pull down the lock. It'll look locked but it's not. (not cheap)
Also the tailgate lock latch are a common problem in the earlier models like 2006. (approx. $500 +)
The power steering reservoir (approx. $100 rebuilt)

Does the leaking problem only apply to the ML320 CDi, or does it apply to the ML280 CDi as well?

i'm not sure... it's over $1k to replace here in Australia.
