W164 ML550 4matic
Steering rack

Hello fellow MB'ers. New to the forums..
I have a 2008 W164 ML 550 4matic that i need an opinion about. She has 48k miles on it and i only put an average of 8k per year. Just recently, the steering rack has begun to leak Is this normal wear? has anyone heard of problems in this part before? I am looking at replacing it, and can not decide if i want to try it myself.. Steering pump looks fine..

Any thoughts and opinions are quite welcome Kind of sadden that the rack only lasted 48k miles..

Look forward to meeting new peeps, and sharing information…

Thanks all, Cheerio!!

This seems to be a common problem.
Had mine replaced due to leaks also.
Good luck

Depends

It is common for these racks to leak. However if the input shaft seal is the source of the leak and the side seals are ok, MB provides a repair kit to fix this. It does require a bit of labor to do so, but can be done. If your side seal and or input shaft are leaking you better off with a rack replacement.

Just had mine replaced 2 weeks ago, estimate was $2000.00, I was slightly out of my CPO warranty, MB picked up 75% of the cost, so it only cost me $500.00.
