Battery for 2006 ML

May need a new battery for my ML 280cdi. The regional Mercedes specialist has quoted £100 for a supply and fit. My local garage says I need a gell battery which would cost in the region of £180. I'm confused. What do I go for? All suggestions appreciated

Neither conventional wet nor gel battery is used in the North American W164. An AGM battery is used (sometimes also known as VRLA, Valve Regulated Lead Acid). Goes for around $200 for a Group 49 which might be an E8 in Europe. Or double that at the Mercedes-Benz dealer.

Its in a bad place (under front right seat) to have to add water. Also bad place if it outgasses. But the Group-49 specifies a vent hose fitting which is used and mandatory.

N4HHE: Thanks for the reply. My local garage has charged the battery up and suggested it's good enough to leave in place for now. The car has been starting over the last few days, even though we've had temperatures around zero C. I shall keep an eye on the situation.
