Mileage Range Counter

Mileage Range Counter
I currently drive a 2011 ML350. In the past when I fill up with gas, the digital range counter would always reflect 472 miles to refuel until recently. Now with a full tank of gas the range counter fluctuates up and down constantly while driving and even when the car is sitting still while running. The fuel gauge reflects a full tank. Right now with a full tank the range counter reads 271 miles. The dealership cannot figure out what has caused this sudden change. My vehicle only has 20K miles on it. Has anyone else had this issue, if so please share? Thank you in advance.

Your mileage range counter is now working in the manner that mine has always operated on both the 2006 and 2010 ML's we own.

The full tank range immediately after a fill up usually goes to 465 for the gas version and about 600 for the diesel version. However, as soon as I start to drive the range will adjust to approximately the range that the instantaneous MPG indicator would yield if multiplied by the available fuel.
*
Yes, the range counter goes down when stopped since the engine is still running and using fuel while you are going nowhere.
*
I can't explain the change you identified, but I find it hard to believe that both of my ML's(gas and diesel) would fail identically for this function.

Newbie
I have an 08 CDI and the digital range counter has always gone up/down to reflect the instant MPG.
I just thought that is how the system is supposed to work, but it does make it a hassle when the gas is getting low because I am never exactly sure how much fuel I have left.

My issues is when on a trip and the gage drops below a quarter tank sometimes it will drop to show it is completely empty and the counter displays ---. I do not have this issue when driving locally and the gage drops below a quarter tank. My independent MB shop said there are multiple sensors and one lives in the gas tank. My 09 is out of warranty and I just may live with this unless my mechanic tells me the fix is reasonable. Going in for service in a few weeks and will find out if they can at least diagnose it is the sensor in the tank

Your independent MB shop should also have told you that the fuel filter assembly for a gas engine ML includes the fuel sender unit (which is why the fuel filter costs more than $250 for the part alone).

Replacing that component should remedy your concern.
