My running boards seems to have seen way too much salt from previous winters, etc! See actual pic below. Should I attempt to clean them with some good alum cleaner ? Or should I replace them altogether ?

Try cleaning them first, use coca-cola and a brush, I've heard it works great. Let the coke soak in.

Try a good body shop/detail shop. They should be able to clean them up or give you an honest assessment if they can be saved.
