tire chains on 265/45 R20 tires ML
We have a ML350 4-matic with 265/45 R20 tires and even though chains are available for the tire size the manual shows them as not possible with a note that damage may occur. Is this correct?

I'm not sure any car currently on the market approves of chains. Doesn't mean they won't work, just means there is a chance of damaging something. You would have to use your best judgement if you're driving in an area where chains are needed and don't bother asking MB to repair any damage from the chains. I suspect they're primarily worried about wheel and body damage if the chains are not snug or are sloppy fitting.
If it were me I'd look at some of the many options that are not chain based and see if they will do the job for you.
I believe the current expectation is that a set of winter tires will handle 90% of the conditions where chains would be needed.
