2012 v 2013 ML350 Bluetec

Good Morning-

I have a 1998 ML320 with 304K miles. Bought it new from the dealer. Love the vehicle. Other than normal wear and tear we have had no problems. I'm looking to replace it with a 2012 or 2013 ML350. We tow so I've been looking at the bluetec but after research I have some serious concerns.

Are the oil cooler issues as prevalent as it seems on these boards? Are there any statistics to pinpoint percentage of diesels with problems v number manufactured in any given year?

I found one post that indicated the issue may have been resolved in 2013 with a redesign. Is that accurate? Based on what I've read I'm wondering if I should nix the diesel and look for a gas engine.

I'm looking at CPO ML350's. Any advise on things to look for on the vehicle to determine if it is developing this problem?

Thanks, in advance, for your help!

When you read forums, it appears that these problems are hugely prevalent, but in reality they're not. I've searched high and low for stats on these types of issues, but I can't find any. I think it's either because they tend to get taken care of under warranty or the occurrence is so low that it's a non issue.

Generally, design issues are identified fairly early on and resolved. I think the oil cooler issue you're talking about was resolved back in 2008 or 2009.

No problem. There are a lot of the these engines and drivetrains out there. The engine has been in production since 2005 and has been put in almost a dozen MB models as well as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler 300, and the Dodge Sprinter. That's a lot of vehicles.

Technical Service Bulletin LI18.30-P-055434 is the one regarding the oil cooler. All 2010 and newer engines came with the newly formulated seal.
