Joe, did you scan all modules for codes?

Do you have Keyless Go?

When you press the open or close button on the key fob, does the check battery window turn red every time?

 

Major, I did scan the entire car for codes but im unfortunately away from the vehicle for the weekend so I will post the stored fault codes when I get back to it.

Keyless Go - I do not have it.

Key Battery Indicator - Yes, it blinks red every time I push a button on the remote. I have tried both sets of keys to verify that both do not work to unlock thr vehicle. I also replaced the batteries in one of the keys with a fresh pair to ensure I had full battery power and still no communication.

 

When you post the codes please indicate which module they are stored in, especially the DAS module

 

I have performed a complete scan of all of the modules and found the following faults:

OCP-Overhead Control Panel:
9704 - CAN reception timeout: N10/8 (Rear SAM control unit).
SAM-F-Signal Acquisition and Actuation Module Front:
9051 - Control module N70 (Overhead control panel control unit) is not sending any data
9058 - Control module N10/8 (Rear SAM control unit) is not sending any data
Rear SAM - Rear Signal Acquisition and Actuation Module:
90C4 - The cable to component Interference suppression element, interference suppression filter has short circuit or no connection.
ESA Driver-Electric Seat Adjustment Driver:
9853 - Fault in CAN communication with control unit Rear SAM
ESA Driver-Electric Seat Adjustment Passenger:
9853 - Fault in CAN communication with control unit Rear SAM
IC-Instrument Cluster:
9112 - Control module rear SAM is not sending any data
9114 - Control module OCP is not sending any data
AAC-Automatic Air Conditioning
9706 - Fault in CAN communication with control unit N10/8 (Rear SAM control unit)

When searching through the list of modules and their associated sub menus, I did not come across the DAS module

 

Joe, look at the codes in your post #10 and compare them to these recent codes and the only code that came up in both is 90C4.

How did you get all of these new codes?

 

My apologies for not being clearer in post #10. Those codes in post #10 were only the codes that were stored in the Rear SAM at that time. Post #31 is the current full fault list from scanning every module.

 

Are you having any problems with the A/C or the seats? If not, delete all the codes in all modules, start the car and then check for codes again.

 

No, the A/C works in both manual and automatic mode and both front power seats have full functionality. I will delete the current codes, scan for new codes, and post the results. Thanks for your help!

When you read the codes, did it say the DAS had no codes or there was no DAS module?

 

When I cycle through the Control Unit Groups and look at the modules that get scanned, there is no DAS module listed in any of the 6 scanned control groups (Drive, Chassis, Body, Information and Communication, Seats and Doors, Air Conditioning).

 

Maybe I was mistaken with the DAS, but did you delete and check for codes again?

 

Major, yes I did delete the codes and drove the car for ~200 miles. I just re-scanned all modules for codes and the only fault that came back was:

Rear SAM - Rear Signal Acquisition and Actuation Module:
90C4 - The cable to component Interference suppression element, interference suppression filter has short circuit or no connection.

The only function that isn't working is still just the remote lock/unlock. I plan on removing the rear SAM unit again tonight and checking for any signs of corrosion that I may have missed the first time around (and check all PCB contact traces for continuity). I will re-clean the board and plug it in tomorrow to see if this fault stays away after clearing it.

 

OK. I'm going out now and will address this when I get back.

 

I just figured I'd post an update on the cleaning process. Last night I pulled the SAM out again and did another general cleaning with a toothbrush/misc. trimmed paintbrushes (to reach underneath all connectors) and IPA in all of the areas that were affected by the corrosion. This morning I went through the board trace by trace to check if there are any further signs of corrosion that I may have missed. I did manage to find a single very small (<1mm diameter) area of corrosion underneath connector J (circled in the image below):



It appears that this may be the source of the short circuit. This corrosion would not brush off with any of the brushes that I had, and I had to resort to taking a toothpick and chipping the corrosion off of the solder mask/traces/vias. The via on the lower right side of the corrosion was also internally corroded and had to use the toothpick yet again to clean out the inner surface. After cleaning up this spot it is looking much better:


The SAM is currently drying and I will get it in the vehicle later this afternoon to see if this has solved the issue. Thanks again for all of your help!

 

That code 90C4 refers to A49/1 Interference Filter. As per the Central Locking diag. there is a single wire BLUE, conn. C wire #10.

 

Thanks for the schematic! I will inspect the plug socket on connector C for signs of corrosion and will trace the wire to see if I can find a loose connection or a short.

I know this is 3 years ago but the back and forth was riveting. I am wondering from the OP (Joe2016) if this resolved the problem?

I am getting the EXACT same codes and have the exact same issues with my fobs no longer unlocking or locking to doors.
I have to reach into the front from the back seat to lock my car now.
I would love to know is that pin on the SAM fixed this lol.

 

Bobenis - I no longer own my ML 350 but still get notifications from the site and continue to read and sometimes respond. I really liked the camaraderie here! I am now on a Jeep Grand Cherokee site where we don't have near the fun.

Never did get an answer from the OP on your question and 43SQD is now deceased otherwise I'm sure he would have answered you. Still sometimes miss my ML but didn't miss the constant issues I was having with it, especially with the ECU. The new Jeep issues are mostly software related and out of my league there.

Kinda fun to work on them and fix, I gotta admit.
Well, minus the gasket from the cat to the DPF which I could not get the clamp to close over yesterday & was screaming explicatives for the neighbors to hear.
