Cabin filter
Has anyone changed the cabin air filter in ML 500 2006. I ordered a filter but the mechanic said it was wrong one. Supposedly you change it from underneath glove box but he said nothing there. I received one filter which he says is too small. Now I notice that there are 2 cabin filters. Any help would be appreciated.

The glove box is completely removed. The filters 2ea will slide into a compartment in the firewall. This is a fairly easy DIY if you take your time, and you have a flexible body. There are a few YouTube videos on this. Most important part is take your time.

Can it be replaced from inside the engine compartment on the firewall?

No, it's replaced from inside the car. Not very many screws to remove, it seems hard to do, but once you have done it the first time it's easy. Like I said, take your time, band watch the videos numerous times before you start.

Yes, carefully. While the correct way is to disassemble the glove box, they can be massaged and squeezed out and back in from the engine bay. There are several people that do this and quite likely some Benz mechanics that do it this way because of the simplicity.

These photos may help for the cabin filter replacement procedure doing it from the engine bay side. This is on a 2008 ML 320 CDI LH drive vehicle. At the time I was also replacing the engine air cleaner and fuel filters and so items unrelated to the cabin filters will be noted are removed in the first photo.

I have a 2017 GLS 550 with the P21 Air Ionization Package. Does anyone know the proper part numbers for the cabin air filters?
I believe the outer filter is 166-830-02-18.
I found that the inner 2 filter set might be 166-830-03-18. This is superseded by 166-830-72-01.
However, the -72-01 part number says its NOT for cars with the P21 package.
Confused as to what the inner filter part number should be!
