ML320 CDI Tow Package/Transmission Cooler Q

Does anyone know if ML320 CDI that came equipped from the factory with a hitch has a different radiator or transmission cooler than one that didn't come from the factory with a hitch?

I've got a factory hitch I'm planning to install this weekend so I can use my 07 CDI (didn't come with a hitch) to pull my 6500lb trailer, but want to make sure I upgrade the transmission cooler if it is different so I don't cook my transmission when towing.

The tow capacity for your vehicle is only 5,000lbs with the factory hitch. You may want to upgrade the hitch further if you're planning on towing 6,500lbs, and get an aftermarket cooler.

Also, do you have air suspension on the back? If not, you'll likely encounter some sagging if your tongue weight is above 500lbs.

The motor is plenty capable of pulling that much weight, but you will want to cut your engine oil change interval in half, as well as your transmission fluid.

Odd, a friend with an 07 CDI has a factory hitch rated for 7klbs with 700 lb tongue weight. Looking online, aftermarket hitches show that they're only rated for 5k lbs, while factory hitches are rated to 7k. No air suspension.

My info could very well be wrong. I assume you meant 700 lbs tongue weight. Still, that must come with an upgraded rear suspension - does your friend have rear air suspension?

My mistake, 700lb tongue. He also doesn't have air suspension.

You also need a new rear SAM module when you add towing. It adjusts the transmission shift points when trailer lights are plugged in, and I think it also may play a part in triggering the anti-sway program. If you're pulling a heavy trailer, I think it is essential.

Some people have gotten away with using their existing rear SAM, but that seems to be hit and miss. You can save a lot of cost, time, and effort by buying a Curt powered splice-in kit. This is a $40 solution and works great, compared to the factory solution which, if you have to replace the SAM, is going to run you $1000+, and might only be marginally better.

The factory hitches are definitely better than any of the aftermarket ones that I've seen.
