Rear Liftgate Locking/Unlocking

We have a 2008 ML350 and have started having intermittent issues with the locking and unlocking of the rear liftgate. Took it to the dealer yesterday and they replaced the rear hatch lock assembly. In the meantime I've seen on here that the issue could be with the rear SAM. Needless to say when we picked it up today and got it home the issue was not fixed -- it will work for 3 or 4 times in a row and then not. Luckily they inadvertently sent us home with the technician copy and when looking through it (and finding one or two other faults I did not know about) I see that the diagnostics threw out two error codes for the "rear-end door closing module" - codes 9500 and 9502. My question is basically would these codes have led them to replace the physical latch assembly or are they pointing to an issue with the SAM or something else?

Remove the spare tire and everything else in the cargo area including the thin matting.

You will find rain water or corrosion caused by rain water entry. On the floor you will find the hydraulic pump (encased in a black box) and module that operates the tailgate.

Water entry is caused by faulty tail light seals.

Is there anything I can try short of a replacement of both?

You first have to see if there is damage.

Exclamation Ml350 Rear latch manufacturing issue

i have to post this just for information!, i just replaced the rear latch assembly on my 2011 ML350 blutec. The new assembly cost with taxes $382. After the new unit was in and emergency latch plate re-riveted in place, (parts man gave me the two rivets of correct size & they had replacement latch in stock) I took the old unit apart, a bit tricky as the malfunction meant getting a hooked prob inside it to line up the motor arm with the hole it had to pass through. Bottom line is that this arm was designed to be held by a tab cut and bent from an internal steel plate which the motor arm had jumped over. The latch would not latch closed with the arm in that position. Having just bent the tab a bit more and putting the unit back together it functions again. I am keeping it as a spare not wanting to disassemble the latch again.

Ps. Parts guy informed me that part number had changed twice since my latch was manufactured, thus issue hopefully has been fixed in later units. One of the considerations for leaving the new unit installed once issue was discovered.
