HELP!!!!!!

I bought a 2008 ml320 cdi about a month ago. I did a oil change about 2 weeks ago because info display said check oil next time when refueling.
My wife has been driving the ml and I have been driving her q5. Today she calls me on the way home and says the display says check oil next time refueling. So went she gets home the drivers side and rear hatch is covered with oil
After I open the hood and see the o ring to the oil filter cover had blown out. That's where the oil came from. I'm getting to the question.
So I pull the filter housing, place the ring back in the proper grove, remove belly pans clean all the oil from the under carriage.
Them I start reading and I come across the oil change video I used to change the oil and I remember when I changed the oil the oil filter cover didn't have the what I will call the "nipple" on the end. It was just a cylinder shaped plastic cage. I didn't think much of it then.
I just went out to the shop and removed the oil filter cover and the nipple with the 4 pieces of plastic than connect to the filter leg was broken off and stuck down the filter cavity.
I pulled it out and it is missing about 3/8 of a inch of one of the legs. I matched it up to the oil filter housing. I'm thinking the piece has made it into the motor. This piece had to be broken before I changed the oil. No problems before I changed the oil, no problem after until today.
It lost at least 7+ quarts of oil. No lights came on.
HAS ANYONE HAD THIS HAPPEN? Please give insight. Thank you in advance.

When I changed my oil I always checked the parts I took off to make sure all the parts are there. One time I left the old rubber ring in and put the new part on and it leaked all over. Learned a lesson and after that I always check.

Thanks. It was my first time changing the oil in this car. I only have had it for 1 month. I know know now. I went to benz and bought a new oil filter housing. I replaced it with a new filter and oil. Truck seems to be driving ok. Only have driven it about 10 mikes but no leaks no strange noises. Seems ok. Thanks for the reply.
