You should take the time to read your vehicle's owner's manual. Page 414 explains this in great detail.

2009 ML owners manual, about engine oil.

My opinion, I'm sure others have differing ones... I do it by keeping in mind how many miles I put on the car between oil changes and how long it takes me to get to the next oil change. 5W-30 is fine for winter and summer here in Germany. Mobil 1 oil changes are recommended every 10,000 miles. If you think you will get to the summer within the 10,000 miles, then you should take into consideration the temperature in the summer where you live, and your style of driving. 5W-30 will thin out at high temps faster than 5W-40 or -50. If you do your oil changes more frequently then it's not so much of an issue to have to think so far ahead. My ML has 61,000 miles and it's also a 2009, an average of about 6,800 mi/yr. My mechanic put in 5W-30 last time around. Summers here in Germany are not so hot, and I don't do a lot of stop/start city driving, I do more autobahn. In Berlin I use the very extensive public transportation system with a monthly pass, heck of a lot cheaper than gas and parking.

The way you read the chart in the manual: 0W-30 and 5W-30 are good for low temps, but not so good for high temps. the next column to the right has an upward-pointing triangle at the top to show they are also good for low temps but will retain their viscosity better at high temps. The rest of the columns are read the same way, the first part of the oil's rating numbers is for low temp, and rising numbers also mean the bottom end of the temperature range will rise, the second for high temp viscosity retention.

I don't know the answer to that question. I always have a little noise but it goes away almost immediately and mine is an ML550. You should post your VIN, that way someone with more knowledge can look at the specifics of your car and maybe suggest an answer for you. I have my VIN on my profile, shows on the left side of all my posts. You should also post your mileage.

You're kidding me right? 2009 with only 39,500 miles? You only drive on Sundays with grandma riding shotgun?

Hmm. I did a little searching and found some things which may or may not explain your issue with engine noise.
  • The obvious first possibility is not using the recommended fuel. 91 octane premium, not regular gas.
  • The next explanation is this, and the first cause listed tells me someone's using the wrong oil, or is in dire need of an oil change: https://repairpal.com/crankshaft-bea...on-startup-382
  • There's a lot of "it's normal" bull**** from dealers. Emphasis on the bull****.
  • On 2012 ML350's, there is an issue with noise for about 5 seconds on startup. It's caused by secondary chain tensioners which don't hold pressure. There is one tensioner under each cam cover at the front of the engine. There is a service bulletin for that from MB, document # LI05.10-P-056435.
  • On another website I found this related to a 2009 E350: "The cause of the noise is loose (or undersized) crank bearings. They knock until the car has built adequate oil pressure (usually 3-5 seconds after start). Hotter engines that have sat for a short while seem to be louder than a cold start. Quite a big job, but MB knows about it, and has developed a fix (install larger bearings, decrease tolerance). Now, with that being said, getting them to acknowledge the problem and actually fixing it is another story. . Some people have been successful in both getting the dealer to perform the fix, and the fix completely eliminating the noise. Mine sounds like a 1970's bread truck when I start it up sometimes. Embarrassing for an "e" class. Cant seem normal to me??? Only has 42K on it. Mobil 1 syn oil changes every 5K."
  • One MB mech posted this: "Once the engine is apart they can see which bearings were fitted from the factory. They'll install bearings one size smaller to tighten things up a bit. My shop has done a few of them over the last few years, with good results."

One thing's for sure, you are not alone. Lots of people reporting the same thing, but only on the 350's. I don't hear anything this bad when I start my 550, even on a cold day.
