2008 OM642 is hard to start.

OM642 with 165k miles will not light off unless ign sw Is cycled twice. Has new glow plugs. Possibly has the original GP control module. Only happens first time veh is started during the day. Cranks up in 2-3 seconds otherwise. Fuel filter is new. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

OM642 is an engine, not a car. Please update your User CP (top left) with the year and model of the car, as well as where you live, and please post your VIN.

Don't you think you should be asking about this in a Jeep forum?

With so few Jeeps that have this engine, I thought it best to reach our to the greater MB community to see if there are any others with similar symptoms. BTW, the Jeep cranked on the first try this evening. Ambient temp is around 79 F. Cranking speed is good even when cold (20-30 F). I have tested the output of the GP controller on one lead. I am seeing 2.7-2.8 volts. I have not checked out her leads. I have also checked the resistance to all glow plugs and found them within specs, so the wiring and the plugs are good. I have installed new Bosch 0 250 403 008 glow plugs rated at 4.4v.

Well, the engine needs fuel and air. First place to check is fuel. Leaks on any of the fuel lines means it will suck air and be hard to start. Failing fuel pump means lower injector pressure and may also cause the problem. Did you also check the fuel filter? When was the last time you changed it?
